Job Summary

The School of Mathematical Sciences in the College of Natural and Health Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado invites applications for the position of Director. The Director is the chief administrative and academic officer for the School, has tenured rank of Professor or Associate Professor, and is in a 12-month position. The start date is negotiable but July 1, 2018 is preferred. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in mathematics, mathematics education, or a closely-related field (area open) and be tenured at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor (Professor preferred). Other requirements include a record of excellent instruction, scholarship and service. Experience in administrative and/or leadership roles at the departmental level or
higher is required. Experience with programs in both mathematics and mathematics education is preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to support our undergraduate programs in the mathematical sciences, including mathematics, mathematics education, computer science, and statistics, our online Master’s program for in-service secondary mathematics teachers, our on-campus Ph.D. program in mathematics education, and a wide variety of service courses. The School also jointly delivers an undergraduate program in software engineering with the Department of Accounting and Computer Information Systems.

The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences and is the chief administrative and academic officer for the School with responsibilities for administration, budgetary coordination, faculty/staff hiring and evaluations, professional development, community advancement, fundraising, facilitating the acquisition and implementation of external grants, and providing leadership in the development and oversight of instructional programs, research, and service commitments. Teaching and research expectations for this position are negotiable.

The School: The School of Mathematical Sciences is comprised of a collegial group of six mathematics educators, nine mathematicians, a statistician, and a computer scientist in tenurestream positions and additional full-time instructors. Faculty members are research-active and have obtained approximately $11 million in federal and state grants over the past ten years. The School of Mathematical Sciences offers programs in mathematics and mathematics education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The School awards a B.S. degree in mathematics with emphases in secondary teaching, applied math (including concentrations in computer science and statistics), and liberal arts; an M.A. in mathematics with an emphasis in teaching; and a Ph.D. in Educational Mathematics with the majority of dissertations having a research focus on undergraduate mathematics education. The School has a particular focus on the preparation of highly qualified mathematics teachers at all levels from elementary through postsecondary.

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctorate in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely-related field
• Tenured Associate Professor or Professor
• Record of excellent instruction, scholarship, and service
• Experience in administrative and/or leadership roles at the departmental level or higher

Preferred Qualifications

• Professor with administrative experience as a department chair or assistant chair or equivalent
• Experience with programs in both mathematics and mathematics education
• Experience with programs in computer science, software engineering and/or statistics is a plus.

Salary and Benefits

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits available include health, dental, life and long-term disability insurance, as well as a selection of several defined contribution retirement programs. Dependents and spouses of UNC Employees who are employed as 0.5 FTE or above are entitled to and eligible for Dependent Tuition Grants. These tuition grants will cover in-state tuition charges. Further requirements may exist. Other benefits may be available based on position.

Additional Requirements

Satisfactory completion of a background check, educational check, and authorization to work in the United States is required after a conditional offer of employment has been made. The successful candidate must submit original transcripts within one (1) month of hire.
