Job Summary

Assistant Professor, tenure-track, Elementary Science Education, position #F99994. This 9-month appointment requires the terminal degree in science education or a closely related field. The successful candidate will instruct undergraduate and graduate content courses in the physical sciences as well as science methods for elementary education students, in particular for pre-service elementary teachers, and additional courses in the science education program as needed. In addition to providing service to the program, college, university, and profession, the successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program in science education involving both undergraduate and graduate students. Tenure associated with this position will be housed in the College of Natural and Health Sciences. This position will require successful collaboration across disciplines within the college, the Math and Science Teaching Institute, as well as with the College of Education and Behavioral Science.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires an earned terminal degree in science education with an elementary focus or closely related field with a content emphasis in chemistry, earth science, physics, or closely related field. The position also requires K-8 teaching experience. ABD will be considered if all degree requirements are met by the starting date.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with college level teaching experience, K-8 teaching experience, teacher preparation experience, and the ability to mentor and support students from diverse backgrounds. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in traditional and online settings, scholarly activity, ability to secure external funding, and an interest in serving the profession.

Salary and Benefits

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits available include health, dental, life and long-term disability insurance, as well as a selection of several defined contribution retirement programs. Dependents and spouses of UNC Employees who are employed as 0.5 FTE or above are entitled to and eligible for Dependent Tuition Grants. These tuition grants will cover in-state tuition charges.
